14/52 - Coke

Coke

This photograph appeared on strobist a while ago and I was amazed at how "different" it was. I had never seen "Coke" photographed like this before. I have been meaning to try and reproduce this shot since then but hadn't got around to it for one reason or another. Since the point of my project 52 is to learn to light, I thought of shooting it for this weeks entry.

This again was a basic two light setup.

The Canon 580 EX II was fired at 1/8 through a CTO gel and a shoot through umbrella, from camera left.

I bounced the light from the Canon 430 EX II , fired at 1/32, off a white foam-core board placed behind the subject.

The photograph was taken from above the glass.

If I shoot this again, I'd probably use a macro lens to make the bubbles more prominent. I used the 24-105mm lens for this and wasn't able to get closer because of the lens's minimum focusing distance. The hardest part of taking this photograph was getting the bubbles to look right.

Burgess Falls - Hazelbrook, Australia

Last Wednesday was Australia day and a public holiday in Sydney. We decided to make the most of it and head up to the blue mountains for a walk. It was supposed to be 40 degrees in Sydney and the beaches would have been packed so we were looking forward to some cooler weather and fewer people. I had found a couple of waterfalls, which were away from the usual tourist route, some time ago and we thought we'd visit them.

The walk itself was not the easiest to find as it is not very popular and not marked too well. The only indication as to where the path started was a small board on the side of the road. The path itself was overgrown and would have been quite hard to make out as the path descended from the road. Most of the walk ran along a creek which fed the two waterfalls we visited.

The first photograph on this post was actually produced by stitching 21 separate images together. I had the 24-105mm lens with me but I wasn't able to get back far enough from the falls to compose an image with the entire waterfall in the frame. As it is summer there isn't too much water in the creek and the falls themselves don't look as impressive as they would in winter or spring. Another visit seems inevitable.

13/52 - Jean Paul Gaultier

Jean Paul Gaultier 

My wife got a new bottle of perfume recently and I decided to use it as this weeks shot for the project. I feel my lighting skills are improving because I can setup the lights and capture the photograph I have in mind, a lot faster now. This again, was a two light setup. The most difficult part of it was getting the background light just right. In hind sight, I think a bigger part of the background should have been lit.

Lighting setup - Jean Paul Gaultier

I used two speedlites to light this photograph.

A Canon 480 EX II was fired at 1/64th and zoomed to 70mm, from camera left and aimed at the bottle of perfume. The light form this strobe lit up the left of the bottle. The light was bounced off a white foam-core board to light up the right side of the bottle.

A snooted Canon 580 EX II was fired at 1/32 and zoomed to 105mm and fired at the black background. This strobe was fired through a red gel.
