Iconic Sydney - Australia

A photograph of the Harbour Bridge in Sydney, Australia
Harbour Bridge - Sydney, Australia

I hadn't taken any photographs for sometime so decided to get out with the camera over the weekend. I drove down to Milson's Point to photograph the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. My shot list for the night included a panoramic photograph of both icons. I also tried a new 2:1 ratio on the photograph above and thought it came out pretty well.

I got there at dusk hoping to be able to include a clear blue sky in the photographs but it was cloudy and grey. However, I liked the fact that the setting sun brought out the details on the underside of the bridge. Fortunately there weren't any people around to walk into the frame and I manged to fire off a few "keepers".

The panorama above was a 4 or 5 image stitch. I would have liked the left hand side of the image to be a bit brighter but short of getting there earlier, there wasn't anything I could do. Maybe another drive down to Milson's Point is in order?

These photographs were taken with the Canon 7D and the 24-105mm lens. I also used a tripod for all these shots. An aperture of f14-16 and a shutter speed between 20 seconds and 30 seconds was used for all of these.

Macro Daisy

Daisy

I hadn't used the macro lens for a while so decided to pull it out earlier this afternoon. As usual, I didn't have any particular subject in mind and decided to photograph whatever I found. These small Daisies seem to be all over the place at the moment so I photographed a few of them.

As usual with macro photography, the biggest challenge for me was composing the photograph while  holding the Canon 430EX II with one hand and the camera in the other. I probably should have gone into the house brought a light stand or a tripod to make life a bit easier.

These photographs were taken with the Canon 7D and the 100mm macro lens. For lighting I used a handheld 430 EXII. The photographs were taken at an aperture of around f14-16. The flash was firing at 1/8 or 1/16th. I didn't use ETTL for this shot. I set the power of the flash manually and moved the flash around until I was happy with the level of light. The photographs were taken at 1/250.

Thermal Pools - Rotorua, New Zealand

Thermal Pools - Rotorua, New Zealand

A few months ago we were in New Zealand for a short holiday. We spent most of our time in Auckland but did drive up to Rotorua to see the thermal pools, the main tourist attraction of the area. It was a 3 hour drive from Auckland and gave us an opportunity to see some of the stunning countryside which NewZealand is famous for.

A number of geysers, mud pools and hot springs can be found within a few kilometers of town. We visited the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and completed a one and a half hour walk which led us through all the thermal pools in the park. From some of the higher vantage points we were able to see the varying colours of some of the pools.

The Lady Knox Geyser is the best known of the geysers in the area. Everyday at around 10.15AM the Lady Knox Geyser erupts with the assistance of a local guide. The geyser consists of two water chambers. The temperature of the upper water chamber is cooler than that of the lower chamber. This is due to the fact that the lower water chamber is heated by the volcanic activity while the upper chamber cools down due to the larger opening to the outside.

The eruption is caused when a piece of soap is thrown into the upper chamber and it mixes with the hotter water of the lower chamber (because of the lowered surface tension). The eruption produces a jet of water that can reach 20 meters in height and can last for an hour if the weather conditions are favourable.

The combination of the mineral precipitation, volcanic activity and micro-organisms create the varying colours that can be seen in the pools around the thermal park. The Champagne Pool is especially colourful.

All the photographs on this post were taken with the Canon 7D and the 24-105mm camera. I didn't use a tripod.

Hindagala Temple - Kandy, Sri Lanka

The Hindagala Temple - Kandy, Sri Lanka

The Hindagala temple is an ancient cave temple famous for the art which adorns its ceilings and walls. Most of the paintings date back to the 18th century but there are a few poorly preserved paintings which are said to be from the 5th century. The temple itself was a hermitage used by meditating Buddhist monks for centuries.

The main building, seen in the first image, houses a Buddha statue and a Dagoba. Unfortunately when I got there the priest was away and I was unable to photograph the interior of the cave as the doors were locked. Fortunately there were only a few people visiting the temple when I got there. This gave me plenty of time to set up the tripod photograph the exterior of the main building.

There are two entrances to the main temple. The first is a flight of steep stone stairs that lead to the temple from the main road below. The stairs are easy to miss as there are no signs indicating the whereabouts of the temple. The second entrance is a small path accessed from a side road that is some distance away. The path winds its way through a number of large boulders and overgrown properties but is not as steep as the stairs. The photograph below is the  entrance to this path from the temple.

All photographs on this post were taken with a Canon 7D and the 24-105mm lens. No flash were used to photograph the paintings but the tripod did come in handy! I will try and photograph the interior of the temple on my next visit.
