This shot of the tidal pool at narrabeen beach was taken about twenty minutes after sunset.

This shot was taken from Mrs Macquaries chair. Most of the other photographers left soon after sunset. They weren't around when the sky turned orange.

St Mary's Cathedral - High Dynamic Range

The ratio between the highest and the lowest values of a physical medium is referred to as "dynamic range". The dynamic range of a real world scene can be very high if the image, for example, includes a bright sky and dark shadows. Unfortunately cameras are unable to capture the whole range of such scenes.

In order to produce an image with the whole dynamic range of the scene, several photographs have to be captured at different exposure levels and merged together to produce an HDR image.
